The second wave of great British drummers that followed the ‘60’s legends to The States included such great names as Ian Paice, Roger Taylor, Simon Kirke, Jerry Shirley, Bev Bevan, Topper Headon, and the great Tony Brock. From the drum roll and roundhouse fill that kicked off the cowbell-driven beat to “Looking For Love”–the first track on The Babys’ self-titled debut in 1976–it was clear this band had a serious tough guy driving it.
Laying down beautifully-crafted drum parts on a string of superb albums that closed out the ‘70s, Tony was yet another groove king who, in my opinion, never got the full recognition he deserved and was more valuable to that band than most fans realize; contributing heavily to both background vocals and songwriting throughout the band’s career. He was a master of playing for the song, while achieving that rare ability of bedrock-solid hard rock drumming combined with subtlety and taste.
