Jonathan David Samuel Jones was born on October 7, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois. The man known to so many as “Papa Jo” spent 74 years on this earth until he passed away after a valiant battle with cancer on September 3, 1985.
But, this man’s name and legacy live on due to what he contributed while he was here. And what exactly did he contribute? It’s widely agreed upon that Papa Jo was the archetype of modern drumming. He was the architect who we can thank for paving the way. He was an original, impacting the careers of the majority of drummers you can call out by name. He was a true artist…a man of passion, and pursuit of defining what he knew was his to define.
