Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York and Undead Music has announced the initial line-up for ‘A Night Of Improvised Round Robin Duets,’ set for May 14 at the majestic Manhattan venue The Town Hall. The event premiered in 2013 as part of the Red Bull Music Academy in New York and, this year, the event will return with all new artists including: legendary New Orleans pianist Allen Toussaint, global fusion pioneer Karsh Kale, Los Angeles-based producer Daedelus, Nels Cline—a guitarist with a history in punk, alternative rock and jazz who currently performs with Wilco—The Haden Triplets’ violinist and vocalist Petra Haden, and more. See initial line-up below.
The evening will give music fans a chance to hear artists from the music realms of jazz, electronic, experimental, rock and everything in between as they’ve never heard them before. The format will see one musician starting things off with a solo improvisation lasting five minutes. Another musician then will join for five minutes of duo improvisation. After those five minutes, musician #1 will leave the stage and musician #3 will join musician #2 for another five minutes, and so on. Noted the New York Times in a review of the 2013 show, “the line-up, mixing generations and genres, was cleverly curated to push each musician in different directions as partners changed.”
The event is part of the Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York. The month-long series of live performances, club nights, lectures, art installations and more, is set to kick off May 1 with a lineup of innovative artists, unique venues and signature show concepts that explore today’s musical landscape while paying homage to its history. The diverse musical showcase, which will become an annual New York City festival, is a legacy to the critically acclaimed Red Bull Music Academy that took place in New York in 2013.
