altWhitechapel Drummer Ben Harclerode Talks Drumming

New Album Info, Contest and Tour details

Whitechapel, one of the US’s premier deathcore acts, is known for their blistering riffs and brutal blast beats. But what is it that keeps drummer Ben Harclerode interested in his instrument? “Lately I've been trying to get away from playing only ‘metal drums,’” he tells Drumhead. “It's been an ongoing process for the last couple years. Playing blast beats and fast double bass for years will really burn you out and make you lose interest in playing. Death metal style playing is also very monotonous, dynamically bland and pretty unmusical.

“There are a couple metal drummers out there that still get me stoked when I hear them, but that's because you can tell that they are drummers who also play metal. Not just ‘metal drummers.’ So that's really been my focus lately. Getting back to actually playing drums and not being a one-trick-blast-beat pony. Honestly, most real musicians could care less how fast or how long you can blast or move your feet.

“So it's really been a matter of learning new patterns and styles of playing. Really, that's the only thing that even keeps my interest with drums. Continuing to learn new things and never plateauing or becoming stagnant. Wide knowledge and proficiency of different styles of playing is what a makes a good drummer good.”

Whitechapel release their fifth full-length albhum Our Endless War via Metal Blade Records on April 29th. Listen to the first two singles "Mono" and "The Saw is the Law" and pre-order Our Endless War in exclusive bundle packages at http://www.metalblade.com/whitechapel

altIn conjunction with the release of Our Endless War, Whitechapel has created an online contest with their new single "Mono." Vocalist Phil Bozeman has a video message for fans that are interested and would like to enter the contest, which can be viewed HERE. The object of the contest is that fans will film themselves doing a vocal cover of the new song "Mono" and then upload their videos to YouTube. The contest ends April 21st and the winner will be announced on April 22nd. The winner will receive a grand prize package that consists of: One Deluxe CD Bundle of Our Endless War, a 30 minute vocal coaching lesson with Phil Bozeman via Skype and their video will be featured on Phil's YouTube Channel.
