Metallica: No Other Band Matters

By Heather Smith

Last night’s astonishing Metallica concert at NYC’s legendary Apollo Theater was truly one for the record books: A concert that people will say, “You were at that show?!” Usually selling out venues 35 times the size of the historic venue, The Apollo’s capacity is 1,506, Hetfield said, “I can’t believe they let us play here. This place has so much history.” The band’s sound, not being washed out by arenas with dead spots or inclement weather, was dialed in for maximum brutality.

Sirius XM sponsored the free to subscriber event, which aired live on the satellite radio's "Mandatory Metallica" channel. Before the concert, non-subscribers lined up outside hoping to be chosen for unclaimed subscriber tickets. Promoters of the event, as the band’s set time drew closer said, “Let’s make these people’s dreams come true,” and handed out tickets to rowdy cheers. All attendees received souvenir laminates; T-shirts; free beer, wine, soft drinks and water; as well as the concert of a lifetime.

The band played every standard from their rich arsenal, fan favorites “Master Of Puppets,” “Harvester Of Sorrows,” “Orion,” “Sanitarium, “Creeping Death,” closing the show with “Seek & Destroy.” (Complete set list follows.) Each musician took the time to display their own prowess on his instrument, and the enthusiastic crowd appreciated each offering.

Look for the Metallica’s epic concert/journey quest movie, Through The Never, in IMAX 3D next week.
