Carl Palmer: ASIA Announces 2014 Gravitas World Tour

Initial dates will take the band to Japan, England and North America

The dragon has risen again

ASIA is:

John Wetton - lead vocal and bass

Carl Palmer - drums

Geoff Downes - keyboards

Sam Coulson - guitars

Iconic British rock band ASIA’s 2014 Gravitas World Tour begins tonight, and incorporates visits to Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The band is taking to the road in support of its acclaimed new CD, Gravitas, introducing its newest member, guitarist Sam Coulson.

“It always was a great live band, but this time the dragon has awakened with fresh energy, direction and purpose,” says Asia’s John Wetton. He adds, “Last summer, ASIA played live dates, which opened in the UK, took in the massive Sweden Rock Festival, a European tour and a TV show in the glorious Roman Amphitheater, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, with an orchestra. These were the first dates of the new chapter of ASIA.”

“There is a great energy when we step on stage,” says keyboardist Geoff Downes. “We can feel it and I know the fans can feel it.”

Asia’s debut album exploded onto the music scene in April, 1982, with several Top 10 singles. Featuring Geoff Downes on keyboards, Steve Howe on guitar, Carl Palmer on drums and John Wetton on lead vocal and bass, Asia was the logical successor to their collective bands of the '70s: Yes, ELP, King Crimson, UK and The Buggles.

Asia became one of the most played acts during the first year of MTV. Throughout most of '82, Asia ruled the radio airwaves and MTV, selling out every date on tour as the debut album crushed all the competition in record stores around the world.

ASIA’s original line-up reformed in 2006. It was the first time the four original members had worked together in 23 years. Prior to Gravitas, ASIA had completed several world tours, released three brilliant studio albums—2008's Phoenix, 2010's Omega, and 2012's XXX—as well as three live albums and Blu-ray/DVDs.

For ASIA's long-devoted fans, the band’s return to the concert stage cannot come soon enough. As Carl Palmer says: "Performing onstage is where this band truly comes into its element. Seeing the fans reacting to our music is what makes it all worthwhile. It is the fuel that drives this train we call ASIA."

Stars Create Music Video Mixes Which Anyone In The World Can Record With
Top Three Drummers Listed
New App for iPad and iPhone Simplifies Creative Collaboration

(Dublin, Ireland) May 22, 2014 – WholeWorldBand is the unique new iPad and iPhone app that allows users anywhere in the world to record music and video in a virtual studio with anyone, including their musical heroes.

Founded by award-winning music-video director and 10cc member Kevin Godley, WholeWorldBand is a new way for people around the world to make music together. Think of it as your own multi-track version of YouTube where you can record with anyone, anywhere, with an army of major recording artists, including Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Stewart Copeland (The Police), Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), David Gray, Passenger, and others.

Everyone from famous professionals to complete beginners can work together to create great songs and visuals using just the camera and microphone in their iOS device - and then share their Video Mixes directly to YouTube, Facebook, Soundcloud, and Twitter.

So far the App’s Top three drummers are Stewart Copeland, Gil Sharone, and Drumhead’s own Jonathan Mover:

1. Stewart Copelandalt

As one third of The Police, Stewart Copeland took the template of punk and turned it into a global pop success. Following the group's split he went on to work in the worlds of film composition, TV soundtracks and opera, as well as exploring his love of world music, jazz and orchestral arrangements. Stewart's Seed track showcases his acclaimed drumming style, focusing on the groove, in addition to his trademark flourishes. A blank canvas, it offers you the opportunity to play alongside one of the world's greatest drummers.

2. Gil Sharone

"I’m hearing alta lot of roots reggae type characteristics that are happening over the drums. Heavy bass, whether someone feels a synth or a real bass, I’m down for that as long as it bumps. I would love people who are familiar with dub elements to help create that vibe, with delays on keys, on guitars, horns for sure. For all you MCs out there, people who know how to toast Jamaican-style feel free to get on top of it. I really just want to create this bridge between roots reggae, hip-hop and electronic music..." With his fresh perspective, dedication and love for the craft of drumming, Gil Sharone has played with artists including Fishbone, Dillinger Escape Plan, OTEP, Dave Wakeling, Maynard James Keenan, Chino Moreno, HR of Bad Brains and Eek-A-Mouse. Blessed with a capacity to come into any professional environment and instinctively play exactly what is needed, Sharone has gained a reputation as a veritable drumming ninja.

3. Mover

"Here you’re going to find a drum track that I just laid down for you to take and do what you would like to. It’alts what I would think of as bombastic Motown - it's got a funky back beat but a heavy kick and lots of different bits and pieces with an intro, a verse, a chorus, a little breakdown bridge in the middle of half time and an alto. Good luck and have some fun..." A session drummer of huge experience, Mover has played with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Alice Cooper, Shakira, Julian Lennon, Everlast, The Tubes, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Joe Satriani and others. Recorded in New York, his Seed track is the perfect starting point for any style of musical collaboration.

A WholeWorldBand “Seed Session” is the starting point for each “Video Mix.” Seed Sessions are music-video recordings that anyone can sing or play along to and become a music-video producer by creating a Video Mix with up to six simultaneous tracks. Alternatively, users can upload their own Seed Session and let others add to it. Anyone can contribute to WholeWorldBand, perform with music legends and friends, and share the results on social media outlets, whatever the level of their musical ability.

Crucially, WholeWorldBand has pioneered a sophisticated digital rights management system that enables artists to earn revenue for their work. WholeWorldBand sets up all of the required performance royalty contracts when you create a Seed Session or contribute to one. If you create a Seed Session, you share in the revenue generated by those contributing to your track. Or if you contribute to an existing Seed Session, and your work gets used, you get paid; and with major artists already uploading Seed Sessions, this gives everyone a chance to potentially play on a major hit record.

“According to the IFPI Digital Music Report 2014, record labels are making more money from fan-based music videos than the companies are from their official releases,” said WholeWorldBand CEO John Holland. “The current generation of video creation tools are complex and hard to use. Giving fans an easy-to-use app that allows them to create fun videos with their favourite artists effectively brings this ability into the mass market mainstream and encourages increased engagement. Several artists on WholeWorldBand want to release fan generated versions of their music, so we are creating a win-win environment for fans and artists.”

Scott Amendola: Fade To Orange

Fade To Orange: An orchestral recording

Fade to Orange is an orchestral piece Amendola wrote that includes Nels Cline on guitar and Trevor Dunn on electric bass.

Virtuosic drummer Scott Amendola has launched a campaign to fund the recording of his very personal composition, Fade To Orange. He sends the message below. Information on funding his campaign can be founnd here.

Greetings Friends!
Photo: Peter Gannushkin

We are so glad you found us! Now check out how YOU can help make the recording of Fade To Orange a reality. I wrote FTO between 2009 and 2011. It was performed on April 15th, 2011 in Oakland, CA at the wonderful Paramount Theater. The piece features Nels Cline on guitar, Trevor Dunn on electric bass, and yours truly on drums, and electronics. Writing Fade To Orange was, by far, the biggest challenge for me as a musician. But one of my feelings about music is that composing is the most rewarding part of being a musician. So with that in mind, FTO has been the most rewarding experience for me as a musician thus far.

Recording FTO is a must for me. It’s an important piece of my life as a musician. I never thought I’d have the opportunity to write for an orchestra, let alone perform with one, and along with my musical pals Nels Cline, and Trevor Dunn. So recording it properly is extremely vital! We’re really looking forward to sharing this music with you and doing it in such a cool and unique way.

Fade To Orange is dedicated to my amazing wife. It’s nearly impossible to put intalto words or music what she means to me. But this piece is my gift to her for being the greatest gift I could have ever asked for.

We would love for you to be a part of the process of making this piece come to life. Below this screen --" you’ll see some different ways to be part of the process. Lots of options! [For these options please visit Scott's PledgeMusic site here.]

I’m grateful for your time, and thanks in advance for being a part of this.

Peace & Love,

-- Scott

Todd Sucherman Talks About New Pearl Snare; Styx/Foreigner Tour Information

Styx’s Todd Sucherman, out on The Soundtrack Of Summer tour with Foreigner and guest Don Felder, took a minute out of his busy schedule to discuss his new favorite piece of gear, his Pearl Reference Brass 14x5 Snare:

“I've been in the mood for a metaltal drum, and I had Pearl build a monster for the road,” Todd says. “I wanted a 3mm thick brass shell with Reference Pure lugs, triple flanged hoops and a Masterworks badge. The entire drum is plated in titanium rose gold to match the rose gold hardware on the kit. It's got the cream puff with a snap on top. Just what I was looking for with all the outdoor summer shows. And it does the job in arenas too! It's been a great start of the tour and I'm looking forward to the rest of the dates.”

You can see Todd put the drum through its paces throughout the summer. Dates here. The bands released a 16-track companion album exclusively at Walmart, with contributions from Felder, titled The Soundtrack Of Summer. The track list includes Foreigner hits “Cold As Ice,” “Juke Box Hero” and “I Want To Know What Love Is,” and STYX hits “The Grand Illusion,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Renegade.” The collection finishes with the spectacular highlight, a brand new interpretation of one of classic rock’s most successful songs ever, “Hotel California.” Original songwriter Don Felder teamed up with Styx and Foreigner for this very special collaboration, as well as a stunning new version of Foreigner’s massive hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” which is only available as a limited edition vinyl disc and on iTunes here.

The Jack DeJohnette Trio was rekindled in February last year with a sold out show at Brooklyn's ShapeShifter Lab. The show garnered the distinction of one of the "Best Concerts of 2013" by The New York City Jazz Record. Tonight the trio returns with encore performances at 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Tickets are $35. This show promises to be one most memorable musical events of this Summer.

DeJohnette has served as a father figure to both Coltrane and Garrison and their musical collaboration dates back several years. Their reunion was inevitable, especially since Garrison and his business partner, Fortuna Sung, opened ShapeShifter Lab in the Gowanus/Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn in 2012, and has established itself as a Brooklyn hub for a variety of creative music.

The occasion also marks the public presentation to NEA Jazz Master Jack DeJohnette of the Jazz Journalist Awards 2014 Traps Drummer of the Year Award.
